Orton-Gillingham Approach to Teaching Reading

The Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading was developed to teach students who have difficulty with printed words. Characteristics of the approach include:

  • Language-Based Instruction – Children learn to understand the nature and structures of the English Language.
  • Multi-Sensory – Children learn simultaneously using all of their learning pathways, which reinforce one another. Spelling and reading are taught together.
  • Structured, Sequential and Cumulative – The language is taught systematically. Sounds are taught in isolation, and then blended together to make syllables and words. Children move to new material only when they have mastered previously taught material.
  • Cognitive – Children learn the history and rules of the language and how to apply them to reading.
  • Individualized – Your child’s program will be developed to meet your child’s needs.
